Edexcel A-Level Geography Spencer Whetton — A* Revision Tool

Case Studies: 32 Essay Types: 4 Key Terms: 60
Geography essays live or die on named examples with specific data. Every 20-mark essay needs at least 2–3 case studies with precise facts, dates, and figures. Edexcel examiners reward specificity — “a country in Africa” scores nothing; “Uganda, with 48% of its population under 15 (2020)” scores highly.
Edexcel Geography uses 12-mark “assess” and 20-mark “evaluate” essays with predictable command words. Master these four frameworks and you can tackle any question. Each essay should contain 3–4 developed paragraphs with evaluative balance throughout — not just in the conclusion. Edexcel mark schemes reward a clear judgement supported by evidence at every level.
Paper 3 is a synoptic investigation based on a resource booklet. You must draw connections across all topics from Papers 1 and 2. Edexcel specifically rewards students who link physical and human geography, showing that you understand geography as an interconnected discipline. The resource booklet will provide data, maps, and sources — you must apply your knowledge across the entire specification to analyse them.
Examiners expect precise use of geographical terminology. Using the correct term can be the difference between a Level 3 and Level 4 response. Terms marked COMMONLY CONFUSED are frequently misused — learn the exact distinction.
